Dear Prof. Uspensky, Best Wishes on your 70th Birthday! Yours, Solomon Feferman
To Professor Vladimir Uspensky,
On the occasion of his 70th birthday,
At the level of pure spirits in virtual reality,
I had already met you through your publications.
But we first met in real time and space one summer
on the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria. This historical
occasion was marked by a bounded but large number
of local cognacs, whose spirituous effects still
dim my memory, 15 years later. What has never
dimmed, however, is my admiration for your work
and personality!
All the best on this 70th anniversary from
Johan van Benthem

Dear Professor Uspensky,
It is a pleasure to send you my warmest regards on the
occasion of your 70th birthday. I have very much enjoyed our
friendly work together over the last eight years on the reviews
in The Journal of Symbolic Logic. And just recently we almost
-- but not quite -- met in person.
Along with your many friends and colleagues, I wish you
many more years of active life in our world of mathematical
logic.
Best regards,

Dear Vladimir Andreevich, On the occasion of your 70th birthday, I have the pleasure to send you my warmest regards. From the grandiose epic of your first visit to France, I have undoubtely the conviction that you possess a wonderful mystical power: as you told me before your visit, zero probability events assume a positive probability as soon as you are concerned! Incredible events that I can witness you participated in, form a perfect example of infinite chaotic set. To be able to generate perfect examples is a scientist's dream. To be more precise, and to relate this observation with one of your open problems, I must add that this set of events is also unpredictable. You still make me dream: these events cannot happen in true life for sure! Who could believe that at your second visit in France, the airport's "automatic" doors would open in front of all passengers but not you?! Forever, I thank you for transforming a scientific visit into an epic, and material life into legend... I hope that for many more years you will continue forming remarkable pupils and writing books that are constant sources of amazement. Diplodocally yours, Bruno Durand. PS: Et s'il n'en reste qu'un je serai celui-la. -- V.H.

L.S., Wonderfull initiative. Enclosed are my dear wishes and greetings for
my dear friend Professor Vladimir AQndreevitch Uspensky, both from
me and my wife Pauline who counts Vladimir as one of her dearest
friends. That he may live in good health, good work, and good
spirits, forever!

CONGRATULATIONS TO PROFESSOR VLADIMIR ANDREEVICH USPENSKY ON HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY
It is remarkable that November 27th, 2000 is the 70th anniversary of
my friend Professor Vladimir Andreevich Uspensky,
head of the department of mathematical logic and theory of algorithms.
This date is very familiar to me since I always confuse it with the birthdate of
my mother, November 28. Apart from this metaphysical connection
Vladimir is a close friend---he helped me greatly in writing a Book
ISBN 0-387-94848-6, was the keynote speaker at the occasion of
my 25 year jubilee as an employee at the Mathematical Center in Amsterdam,
did me the honor of tutoring me in Kolmogorov complexity, and
was the gracious subject of the novel ISBN 90-5018-345-x titled
``Floating Pavilion'' written by Pauline van de Ven. It is proof
of Vladimir Andreevich's arresting personality that his sharp
observations and penetrating wit inspired
the literary device of a satire on Dutch society as
seen through the eyes of a foreign visitor closely modeled
on Vladimir Andreevich.
Our earliest contacts were by mail in 1987 when Vladimir Andreevich
invited me to publish a Russian translation of a survey on
Kolmogorov complexity (co-athored by Ming Li) in Uspekhi Mat Nauk,
the translation being done by A.Kh. Shen and N.K. Vereshchagin.
I first met Vladimir Andreevich in person at Stanford University in 1990
at a meeting of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence.
Then, later, we were fortunate enough that Vladimir Andreevich
agreed to spend a three months visit at CWI pursuing research
in Kolmogorov complexity and kindly correcting errors in my
manuscript. On returning to Moscow Vladimir Andreevich
sent me this gracious message which exemplifies his savoir vivre:
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 93 16:41:45 +0300
Return-Receipt-To: dir{a}viniti.msk.su
X-Mailer: BML [MS/DOS Beauty Mail v.1.36]
Status: R
Dear Group Leader, Great Landlord, the Book's Author and Friend:
this is to send my kindest regards, extremely high gratitude
and best wishes to Pauline and you. V.
Indeed, we became such good friends that Vladimir Andreevich
agreed to be a lecturer in a small symposium at the occasion
of my 25 year Jubilee at the Mathematical Center, now called CWI.
This was a painful reminder that time goes on, but Vladimir Andreevich
was there to relieve the pain. In fact, he also wrote an article
entitled ``Don't even dare to think, let alone say, anything
about {\em A Woman's} Logic'' in a Liber Amicorum presented
to me at that occasion (no ISBN number). The woman's logic is
a suggestion by A.N. Kolmogorov to the Vladimir Andreevich
of a special rule of inference (added to an appropriate axiomatization)
that states:
if P --> Q and Q is pleasant, then P.
This is an admirable suggestion, wholly in agreement with L.E.J. Brouwer's
opinion that mathematics is the result of the creative subject,
even more so than traditional intuitionistic logic. I believe that
the ramifications of this rule of inference have not been thoroughly
investigated yet. An attempt by Vladimir Andreevich to get it
in print in the Journal of Symbolic Logic eventually floundered
on the highest authority in JSL's production office as being
politically incorrect. The mentioned Liber Amicorum above has no
ISBN number. There is a task to be done to get WL in print in
a technical journal.
Let me finish by expressing the hope that --- apart from good health ---
Vladimir Andreevich will find the opportunity to execute the plan
(apart from getting W-Logic in print)
discussed in the self-explanatory email below.

Dear Arjen,
I carefully looked at the book proposal by Vladimir A. Uspensky
and A.Kh. Shen' and Nicolai A. Verashagin.
These proposed authors are experts in the area and (if written)
this could result in a very valuable book in an area which is
bound to expand. It is certainly rapidly gaining interest.
The book will add a valuable perspective from the Russian
research tradition to the subject--a perspective and results
which are not otherwise accessible in the western literature.
The authors have been partially responsible for the creation of the
mathematical basis of the study of Kolmogorov complexity and
(pointswise) randomness. Uspensky and co-authors have written some
very authoritative and readable surveys of (parts of) the proposed
scope.
Therefore I believe that the proposed book is a valuable addition
to the scientific literature in the subject, has its own specialties
and approach, will be scientifically high quality, and will presumably
attract customers.
I recommend the book for publication in the Math Library series
Best Regards, Paul Vitanyi
Dear Vladimir Andreevich, my best and most warm wishes on your 70th Birthday! I always, with a great pleasure and gratitude, recall your and Georg E.Vledutz's Seminar at VINITI which I was attending in 1959-1962. I remember now the hot and deep discussions apropose of (at that time) last papers and books of A.Church, S.Kleene, A.Tarski, etc., as to basic problems of mathematical logic, metamathematics, and foundations of mathematics which you realized with Dmitrii Anatol'jevich Bochvar, Mark Efimovich Vol'pin, Viktor Kafarov, Yulii Shreider, Alexandr Esenin-Vol'pin, Nikolai Stjazhkin, Viktor Finn, Deljus' Lahuti, Lena Paducheva, and many other (at that time) young and enthusiastic your colleagues, disciples, and followers. It was the most important and remarkable time in my scientific life. Thank you veru much for all that. Ot vsej dushi zhelaju Vam mnogije leta zhizni, krepkogo zdorov'ja i novyh tvorcheskih dostizhenii. Sincerely yours, Prof. Alexander Zenkin

Dear friends and collegues of Vladimir,
From Paul (Vitanyi) I heard of the liber amicorum for prof. Uspensky. If
possible, I would like to make a small contribution. (Unless of course, it
is only for mathematicians; Paul didn't know).
yours sincerely,
Pauline Vitanyi-van de Ven

Birthdays.

Dear friends and collegues of professor Uspensky, Here follows a little text I would like to submit for the liber amicorum: A friend in the Third Degree Elsewhere in this document, Paul (Vitanyi) writes that Vladimir and I are good friends. This is not entirely accurate. We are Friends in the Third Degree. I was writing a small book about certain pecularities that are typical for Dutch society, when Vladimir came to live in Amsterdam for a few months. It is a useful and often tested formula, in satire, to look at one's own country through the eyes of a stranger. Only a stranger can lend the desired importance to perfectly ordinary and everyday things. Now this extremely galant and tirelessly enquiring Russian professor that Paul brought home one day, who entered with a handkiss and who always carried with him a little piece of paper on which he had jotted down good conversation topics as well as a list of questions about the Dutch and their strange customs that betrayed a powerful talent for observation, seemed to me the perfect character for my book. While writing the manuscript, I used his real name. Vladimir Uspensky. You see it is hard to think of a more beautiful, more completely Russian-sounding name than this. So when I was almost finished, I asked him if it was all right if I used his name in the book too. He said, galant and graceful as always, that he would be the most honored man in the world. The book appeared in print in the summer of 1997. When, at his next visit to Amsterdam, we happened to chat about him being in the middle of my satire about Dutch society, he appeared to be unpleasantly surprised. I feared he had forgotten that I had asked permission to use his name. I asked him. After some hesitation he said he had expected that I would use only his first name. I was embarrassed. The possibility had never entered my mind. I thought it over and felt depressed. The more so because the book was already printed and the occasion of a correction was (and still is) invisibly far away. We drove on in uncomfortable silence. Suddenly he turned with difficulty (he was fastened to the front chair of our rusty car) and announced with a smile: "Now we are Friends in the Third Degree." It needs a little explanation to enable you to appreciate his way of counting. One starts with a friendship of Zero Degrees. After every quarrel that is made up and every misunderstanding that is cleared away, friendship increases one degree. It is a wonderful system, and wholly in keeping with a saying of (I believe is was) Leonardo da Vinci that 'love increases with knowledge'. So now there is a little satire about Holland which has professor Vladimir Uspensky as its involuntary main character. I hasten to say that every opinion in this book is entirely my own. His is only the endearing personality which in real life I found so inspiring, and with whom I hope, some day in the future in our beloved flat little country by the sea, to become friends in higher degrees. Dorogoy Vladimir Andrieyevich! Kogda my posylali Vam "Happy birthday to you", my nie znali, chto eto yubiliey. I kakoy! No doshli viesti i do nasheho, bogom zabytoho, Novoho Orleana. Tak chto my khotim vospol'zovat'sia sluchayem i skazat' Vam, kakuyu ogromnuyu rol' Vy sygrali v nashey zhizni. Eto nieliehko sdielat' vnutri odnoho sviaznoho texta, tak kak Sasha Raskina prishla k Vam studentkoy, i vsio yeyo myshlieniye formirovalos' pod Vashim vliyaniyem, a Sasha Wentzell pieriesioksia s Vami uzhe priepodavatieliem s dovol'no-taki sformirovannym myshlieniyem. Odnako nasha zhizn' v tiecheniye diesiatkov liet -- i na mekhmatie, i vokrug otdielieniya strukturnoy i prikladnoy lingvistiki, i v VINITI -- prosto niepriedstavima biez Vas, a v obshchenii miezhdu nashimi sosiedstvuyushchimi domami -- biez Vas i Svietlany Markovny. I my blagodarny, chto sud'ba sviela nas s takimi zamiechatiel'nymi liud'mi. Chto kasayetsia Vasheho vliyaniya na sud'bu i myshlieniye lichno Sashi Raskinoy, to ona chastichno opisala eto v svoyom textie k 40-lietiyu OSIPLa. Putiom nieslozhnykh matematicheskikh vykladok mozhno ustanovit', chto, kogda Vy sozdavali eto otdielieniye, Vam bylo... 30 liet! Povierit' v eto nievozmozhno. Voobshche, yesli posmotriet' vnimatiel'no, to vidno, chto Vy stoyali u istokov stol'kikh osnovopolagayushchikh nauchnykh teoriy i dvizheniy i v matematikie, i v filologii, i v informatikie, i organizovali stol'ko zamiechatiel'nykh nauchnykh organizmov i sobytiy -- prosto nie ukladyvayetsia v golovie, kak odnomu chelovieku udalos' vsio eto sdielat'! Tak chto dazhe khochetsia skazat': "Vladimir Andrieyevich! Vy -- nashe vsio!" Yeshcho raz pozdravliayem Vas i zhelayem samoho-samoho luchsheho! Alexandr Wentzell Alexandra Raskina. P.S. A sushchestvuyet li knizhka pro Vas i Hollandiyu na kakom-nibud' dostupnom yazykie? Ili pridiotsia uchit' hollandskiy? A.W. & A.R.
Dorogoi Vladimir Andreevich! Ot vsego serdtsa pozdravlyayu Vas s yubileem i prisoedinyayus' k prekrasnoi formulirovke Sashi Raskinoi i Sashi Ventselya - "Vladimir Andrieyevich! Vy -- nashe vsio!" Ya prorabotala v Vashei gruppe Otdela Semiotiki VINITI pochti 15 let i, pereekhav v Ameriku, s udivlenuyem obnaruzhila, chto priobretyonnyi mnoi za eto vremya "nabor znanii", v sochetanii s mekhmatskim obrazovaniyem, okazalsya sovershenno unikal'nym zdes'. On sootvetstvoval togda tol'ko esche formirovavschimsya zdes' ponyatiyam ob "interdischiplinary studies" mezhdu tochnymi i gumanitarnymi distsiplinami; dlya menya zhe - blagodarya sozdannomu Vami nauchnomu klimatu v etoi oblasti v Moskve - eto byl estestvennyi i privychnyi obraz myslei. Vtoroye - ne menee vazhnoye otkrytiye, kotoroye ya sdelala zdes' - eto to, chto, kak okazalos', v Moskve, v VINITI, Vy nauchili menya (kak pryamo, tak i svoim primerom) rabotat' i voobshe funktsionirovat' professional'no "po-zapadnomu". V eto vkhodit tselyi spektr svoistv - i bolee glubokikh, kak postoyanno prisutstvuyuschee chuvstvo otvetstvennocti za svoyu deyatel'nost', i bolee poverkhnostnykh, kak punktyal'nost', organizatsiya "team work", i t.p. Takim obrazom, vsei svoei uspeshnoi kar'eroi v Amerike ya polnost'yu obyazana Vam! A nachalas' ona zdes' uzh sovsem bukval'no blagodarya Vam. Kogda ya voleyu sudeb okazalas' v Itake 20 let nazad, professor Anil Nerode, vstretivshis' so mnoi na kakoi-to party v Kornelle i uznav, chto ya mnogo let rabotala v Vashei gruppe, rekomendoval menya professoru Richardu Plateku, kotoryi tol'ko chto organizoval nauchno-issledovatel'skuyu kompaniyu v oblasti matematicheskogo dokazatel'stva svoistv programm, gde ya i nachala rabotat'. S neizmennoi blagodarnost'yu i voskhischeniyem, Tanya Korelsky VP for Applications CoGenTex, Inc.

S udovol'stviem vspominaiu vse nashe dolgoe znakomstvo (40 s khvostikom), nachinaia s togo zasedania, na kotorom Vy sformulirovali zadachu leksicheskoi semantiki: ob"iasnenie togo, kakim obrazom "LISHIT' znachit 'zastavit' perestat' imet'". Prodolzhaite v tom zhe dukhe sebe i vsem nam na radost' . Vash Alik (Professor Aleksandr Zholkovsky)
